An end to silence Last week, Clayton Hearing held a Noisy Lunch at Wild Lotus on the Esplanade to highlight the importance of hearing aids in improving quality of life for people with a hearing impairment. Guests were fi tted with the latest in hearing aid technology - Resound Lynx No.9 - while they wined and dined in the noisy atmosphere of the busy restaurant. Audiologist Terry Clayton said most of the guests had never tried hearing aids before. “We’re trying to recreate a normal, everyday situation,” Terry said, adding that it was diffi cult for people to understand just how effective hearing aids could be in separating background noises from speech unless they were in a truly noisy situation. “Hearing aids don’t amplify everything, they’re actually speech processors; they amplify speech and turn background noises down.” Terry said if left untreated, signifi cant hearing loss could affect more than just your conversational skills. “There’s really good research out now that shows untreated hearing loss actually contributes to Alzheimer’s and dementia,” Terry said. Australia Day nominations open If you know an outstanding Aussie or community group on the Fraser Coast, then nominate them for an Australia Day Award. Elsa, Elaine and Gwenda give the Resound Lynx No.9 hearing aids a big tick of approval at Clayton Hearing’s Noisy Lunch. With one in six Australians suffering from a hearing loss, Terry said it was vital that people realised the distinct benefi ts of hearing aids. “You’re changing people’s quality of life,” Terry said. “They’re not just hearing aids anymore, they’re actually a hearing system.” Funding boost for Ozcare Aged care services in the Hinkler electorate will receive an additional $8.6 million in funding under the Federal Government’s 2014 Aged Care Approvals Round. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt announced the funding boost last week, which will provide Hervey Bay’s Ozcare with around 30 residential care places. Mr Pitt said more than 17,800 people would benefit from new places and packages nationally. “These extra residential and home care places will help meet the growing demand for aged care,” Mr Pitt said. He said competition for the funding was fierce. “Nationally this year there were two applications received for every available residential care place and 17 applications received for every available home care place,” Mr Pitt said. “Apart from the obvious benefits for our aging residents and their families, this funding presents enormous opportunity for the local community more broadly. “Growth in the aged care sector has the potential to stimulate the construction industry. It will create jobs and training opportunities.” Great Christmas Gift Ideas...
