Fraser CoastWildlife Solutions snake catcher Drew Hall said that there were always increases in sightings and removals every year during the warmer months. “Snakes become more active during the warmer months, because they can’t regulate their own body temperature and when the weather is cooler, they don’t warm up enough to be as active,” he said. Drew said it was also a good idea to be snake aware all through the year. “Keep properties tidy, don’t leave rubbish laying around, and keep the grass short,” he said. “When moving items be aware of where you're putting your hands and try not to put them anywhere you can't see first.” He added if people find a snake they should stay calm, keep themselves, children and any pets away fromit, and call a licensed snake catcher to relocate it. “If it’s in a room in your house, place a towel under the door to ensure it can’t escape the room until we get there.” Themost dangerous species to look out for are the Eastern Brown Snake and the Death Adder. “People should avoid contact with all snakes, even if they think they know what species it is, they can be very difficult for most people to identify,” he said. “(If bitten) Try not to move around unless you have to, and wrap a compression bandage firmly around the affected limb, starting from the base of the limb towards the bite, apply pressure to the skin and limit movement to stop the venom spreading.” It’s important to stay calm and call 000.
