Macon mouths water AUSTRALIANS all let us rejoice, a Maryborough lady has combined two of our favourite farmyard foods into one mouthwatering smoked delicacy. Amber Bates from Mary Macon will be showcasing her perfected macon recipe – yes, that’s bacon made from mutton – at this year’s Relish Fraser Coast food festival in Maryborough on Saturday, June 4. The recipe, which now has its own patent, has been years in the “macon”. “I love lamb, and my husband bought me a smoker for my birthday a couple of years ago,” Amber told the Indy. “I tried some of it (macon) in New Zealand a few years ago, but it wasn’t great. “So we perfected the recipe and now we’ve actually patented it.” Amber said macon Amber Bates put her macon to the test last week at the Relish Marketplace in Pialba Place, ahead of this year’s Relish Fraser Coast food festival in June. was a healthier and more ethical alternative to bacon. It also has less kilojoules than bacon and is a great source of iron, B2, B3, B12, Omega 3 and 6. “It’s much the same as bacon, except there’s nowhere near the fat content,” she said, adding, “it’s also one of the easiest meats to digest, and there’s no such thing as ‘caged sheep’ in Australia.” Macon dates back to an old Scottish recipe that was popularised in the United Kingdom during World War II after rationing was introduced. Hervey Bay is famous for its scallops and Bauple for its macadamias; now, Amber Bates is on a mission to carve out a name for Maryborough as the macon capital of Queensland. Have a heartfelt cuppa Lioness Club of Hervey Bay members Myra Coleman, Nola Taylor and Elaine Bullman will be getting out the good China for their Valentine’s Day High Tea. The silent killer in our communities HEART disease is the single biggest killer of Australians. The Heart Foundation estimates that several million Aussies are living with a heart condition today. Around 55,000 of these will suff er a heart attack before the end of this year. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills one Australian every 12 minutes, and claimed the lives of 43,603 Australians in 2013 - deaths that The Heart Foundation says are largely preventable. Lower socioeconomic groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and those living in remote areas, have the highest rate of hospitalisation and death resulting from CVD in Australia. VALENTINE’S Day is only a few weeks away, and what better way to celebrate matters of the heart than a high tea with the Lioness Club of Hervey Bay - and it’s all for a good cause. The club is running its fi rst Valentine’s Day High Tea at the Urangan Community Centre from 2.30pm on February 14, with proceeds from the event going towards The Heart Foundation. Lioness Club secretary Myra Coleman said the foundation was a worthy cause. “It’s something that so many people in the community can relate to, especially our members,” she added.
