Hervey Bay Independent : 5th March 2015
YOURSAY Break free from tradition How sad it is that we have women in this land of the free, Australia, still confi ned in burqas, niqabs and hijabs. On something called ‘World Hijab Day’ there were covered-up women in Hervey Bay trying to persuade other women to try on these symbols of extreme repression of women in parts of the Islamic world. Unfortunately for the women, no matter how much they suffer in their fabric prisons here on earth, Islamic scriptures state that most women are destined for hell anyway. But it is not just Islam, all religions have been created by men, so are inherently misogynistic, and intent on restricting women’s freedoms. According to Buddhism, nothing in a female form can realize enlightenment and enter Nirvana. Jewish men praise God every morning for not making them a woman. The misogyny of the Christian religion is endemic, ranging from the anti-women edicts of the apostle Paul to the present day Cardinal Burke who blames feminists for paedophile priests. It is time for all women to free themselves from man-made religions. Merike Johnson Sympathisers too soft? Sorry David Lewis (February 26), but the Bali 9 are going to be executed and die just like a stack of young Australians every day on our streets from drug overdoses, the reason being that our laws are too soft because of attitudes of people like you. Do you really think our constant bleating will change the Indonesians’ minds? You watch the ABC too much. Max Cuthbert Scarness Keeping our streets safe David Lewis in his letter (February 26), decries our federal police force. The fact is the police action that prevented 68,000 hits of cocaine entering this country is to be commended. Just think of the lives this amount of drug could destroy. The question posed on the Four Corners program was not one for our federal police, rather it should have been directed at the Indonesian authorities. Regarding the “AFP had no evidence or lawful reason to arrest”, prior to the 9’s departure from Australia, was the correct one. No crime had been committed in this country. As for keeping their children out of trouble, surely that is the parents role, certainly not the AFP’s. John Neve Torquay Rockwall debate rolls on I wrote recently about people being sick and tired of lying politicians and the need to hold our elected offi cials to account every time they step beyond the truth. I also spoke of the duty on the press, both print and electronic to do just that. On February 12 the Mayor, Councillor O’Connell was interviewed on WIN News and asked to comment on the state of the rock wall on Toogoom beach and the fact that the rocks were breaking up. He stated that the rocks were designed to break so that the smaller pieces could fi ll the gaps between the large rocks. The design engineer wrote in the technical specifi cations; “Any stone which is susceptible to physical change causing spalling, weathering or fracturing in the environment of the site of the works shall not be acceptable.” How can any resident of Fraser Coast region have any expectation of accountable, transparent and credible governance?
