Climate change, a regional outlook A University of Southern Queensland Professor of Climatology and Water Sciences has warned residents and local councils in the Wide Bay Burnett to prepare for the impacts of climate change. Professor Roger Stone, who is also director of the International Centre for Applied Climate Sciences, said the impacts of climate change were highly variable and region-specifi c. “Climate change projections tend to show an overall increase in temperatures, but not every year will be hotter than previous years,” he said. “The temperatures can wax and wane since El Niño and La Niña are the main infl uences on our climate.” Here in South East Queensland, Professor Stone said we could expect to see an unusually late wet season for the beginning of 2015, combined with warmer than normal temperatures and a reduction in overnight frost. In the long-term, we’re looking at an increase in the intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts and cyclones. “There may be some special planning considerations that need to be taken by residents and council,” Professor Stone said University of Southern Queensland’s very own Professor of Climatology and Water Sciences, Roger Stone, talks about the short and long term impacts of climate change in the Wide Bay. of Hervey Bay, adding that the area’s coastal topography made it more vulnerable to extreme weather events - particularly storm surges and cyclones. “If you’re on the coast, being prepared will probably save the day.” Last week, the Bureau of Meteorology confi rmed that 2014 was Australia’s third-warmest calendar year since national records began in 1910. Although climate change might seem all doom and gloom, Professor Stone said that some industries would benefi t from warmer temperatures. “A reduction of the frost season will benefi t our grain industries,” he said, adding that we need to look for opportunities and new technologies to adapt to changing climatic conditions.
