A recent publication from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has revealed that Hervey Bay is among the top 20 most breath-taking locations in Australia - and for all the wrong reasons. The region has recorded some of the highest rates of hospital admission for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the nation. COPD is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory non-reversible asthma, and some forms of bronchiectasis. Every year, around 700 residents of the Bay are hospitalised for COPD. Dr Khoo, Director of Medicine and Specialist for Hervey Bay Hospital, said almost half of all patients diagnosed with COPD were still in the prime of their working lives. “They can’t afford to experience symptoms or be unable to get up and about in the morning,” Dr Khoo said. Pialba resident Norm Fazldeen has always lived an active life, but since being diagnosed with COPD around four years ago, just walking up and down the stairs has become a real struggle. “I can’t walk anywhere near The simple act of walking up a staircase or around a shopping centre is often a real challenge for COPD sufferers like Norm Fazldeen. as far as I used to,” Norm said, adding that simple acts of physical exertion frequently left him breathless. “It just takes the quality of your life down.” COPD is usually caused by smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, occupational dusts and chemicals, heredity or a history of childhood respiratory infections. Symptoms include breathlessness, frequent coughing, wheezing and tightness of the chest. A new COPD therapy called Bretaris Genuair (aclidinium bromide), has recently been reimbursed by the Pharmaceutical Benefi ts Scheme. Bretaris Genuair comes in a pre-loaded inhaler which is taken in the morning and at night to help open the airways and relieve the symptoms of COPD. Around fi ve per cent of Australians aged 55 and over suffer from COPD, a burden that costs the government more than $900 million annually. Symptom management plays a crucial role in allowing people living with COPD.
