Swimming in safety A spate of near-drowning incidents in Queensland last month has reminded parents and carers to keep a closer eye on children in and around water. As we head into the summer holidays, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is urging adults to take simple safety measures to avoid drowning incidents. QAS paramedics attended fi ve near-drowning cases on the Gold Coast recently - all of which involved very young children in backyard swimming pools. With many Hervey Bay families making use of their pools during summer, drowning poses a signifi cant risk, especially for small children. “That is why it’s so important to ensure all children are constantly supervised in the water,” QAS Senior Operations Supervisor Gavin Fuller said. “Many people might think they would hear their child get into trouble in the backyard pool, however small children often make no sound at all when drowning.” “It is a silent killer and can happen in seconds — it’s a heartbreaking experience for families.” Removing objects from around the pool fence to reduce the risk of children climbing to reach the pool gate, and taking children for swimming lessons from an early age are just some of the safety measures people can take to reduce drowning risks. “It’s vital parents move all www.bigscreencinemas.com.au 128 Boat Harbour Drive PH 41248200 ming in safety A spate of near-drowning incidents in Queensland last month has reminded parents and carers to keep a closer eye on children in and around water. With the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report’s breakdown of the 266 drowning deaths in Australia during 2013/14 including 105 drownings in rivers, creeks, lakes and dams - the water safety message is as important in the bush as it is at the beach. “The same rules for pool safety at home should also be applied while on holidays when families may be swimming in unfamiliar hotel or resort pools, creeks and dams,” Gavin added, stressing the importance of learning and quickly administering fi rst aid, specifi cally CPR, in the event of a near-drowning incident.
