Barra now off limits Fishers are reminded that barramundi are off limits in Queensland east coast waters from now until midday, February 1, 2015. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district offi cer Robert Ibell said the closure was in place to protect barramundi stock during their spawning season. “The closed season allows stocks to replenish to ensure there are healthy Hervey Bay Humpback members Darryl and Sue Higgins have returned home after the Alice Springs Masters games with a swag of medals. Hervey Bay swimmers take on world and win Passionate veteran athletes, Darryl and Sue Higgins, shared success at this year’s Alice Springs Masters Games. The Hervey Bay Humpback members returned from the games with a swag of medals, after dominating in their categories. Darryl won the men’s 60 to 64 years swimming age group with fi ve individual gold and two silver medals. A gold and two bronze medals in relays completed Darryl’s swimming medal haul. Another gold in the teams triathlon, in which Darryl raced the bike leg, completed a very successful games for the veteran athlete. A major highlight for Darryl was being presented his 200m freestyle gold by games patron and Australian icon Dawn Fraser. Sue Higgins was thrilled to achieve three individual gold medals in the backstroke events, a freestyle silver and bronze, and two relay silver medals in the woman’s 60 to 64 age group. With 4000 competitors, these games are one of the largest Masters Games in Australia. Thirty different sports are contested at magnifi cent facilities in the beautiful red centre. The next Alice Springs games will be held in October 2016 and will no doubt attract a large number of competitors who descend on the red centre to enjoy, not only the events but the fun, friendship and magnifi cent scenery of this iconic outback city. The closures do not apply to a number of inland waterways, however, size and possession limits still apply to barra taken from these waterways.
