The group is celebrating Fraser Coast Council’s decision to provide them with a permanent space to store their equipment, create, run workshops and practise sessions, while increasing their visible presence in the community. Before moving to the new shed at Council’s Arts and Crafts Village on Bideford St, Arts Council members were storing materials in their homes and cars. Arts programs were run at various venues and homes. “It’s nice to be in one place that suits our needs,” art co-ordinator Karen Chatfi eld said. “We are now in a better position to contribute to Hervey Bay’s cultural life.” She gives examples of several initiatives organised by the Arts Council, including the annual Christmas Show, December 14, Sundays in the Park concerts on every fi rst Sunday of the month and the Open Mic Days on every third Sunday – all held at the stage in Scarness Park. “I’m hoping people will become more interested in the Arts Council and all the artistic endeavours that are happening,” Karen said. Besides being near other cultural organisations, Karen said there were plenty of reasons why Hervey Bay Council for the Arts; co-ordinator Karen Chatfi eld, visual arts teacher Karen Roberts, music coordinator George McLean and secretary Suzanne Geddes (front) with a handful of members (rear) at the new space. the new location had given the Arts Council a new lease of life. A shared outdoor facility with shade, table and chairs, and a barbecue, provides members with additional space to create as well as a social area. And the extra storage space means members will no longer have to cart materials and equipment from place to place. Hervey Bay Council for the Arts aims to provide professional development opportunities for emerging and established artists through the provision of an arts facility, and to encourage the broader community’s participation in, and access to, the arts in a local setting. The new space increases the group’s opportunity to display the growing artistic talents of the local community, attract recognition for the artists, and improve exposure to the general public while giving them an opportunity to grow and professionalise their craft, as well as attracting families and older people who would not normally access the arts on a regular basis. Hervey Bay Council for the Arts is the local branch of Queensland Arts Council – a not-for-profi t community organisation which supports all creative industries; artists, musicians, dancers, writers etc as well as Queensland Arts Council Touring Arts. $25 wash and GHD finish Shoprider 889SL Breeze S Merits Aurora Breeze C COME & SEE IF WE CAN HELP Mention this ad to receive offer.
