As part of the eHealth system, patients and carers will benefi t from improved lines of communication and management, a reduction in length of their stay due to improved operational effi ciency and rapid intervention during critical periods of care thanks to real time alerts and reminders. UnitingCare Health executive director Richard Royle said the new hospital will bring Hervey Bay to the forefront of healthcare innovation. “The ehealth system will translate into one of the best healthcare experiences available to patients in Australia, as well as resulting in St Stephen’s Hospital becoming a national benchmark in quality patient care and safety,” he said. “The new hospital, because of its connectivity, is also able to attract additional specialists into the region enabling us to provide more complex surgery for patients with more acute conditions without them having to seek treatment outside the Fraser Coast.” Ninety-six beds have been fi tted as part of the fi rst phase of the hospital’s development, with a further 84 beds set to be added at a later stage. Following extensive training, newly appointed staff and specialists gave Hervey Bay residents their fi rst glimpse inside the Medical Place complex last weekend when the hospital hosted its fi rst community day ahead of the fi rst patients being admitted on Monday, October 13.
