The session – presented by Sports Community’s Steve Pallas – will focus on: • Strong leadership and what that means; • The power of clear objectives; • Positive and inclusive culture of volunteering; and, • Development of skill capacity of each individual within the club. Councillor for Sport, Recreation, Open Spaces and Events Darren Everard said the workshop was a must for local sports clubs looking to improve their operations. “Most local clubs are run by volunteers so it’s important that they are running at maximum effi ciency and can benefi t from strong leadership,” he said. “These workshops will help develop the skills of club members so they can succeed in their respective positions and achieve their objectives.” Sports Community’s vision is to help build stronger communities by assisting grassroots sports clubs to succeed through the empowerment of club volunteers through the provision of information and training to help them achieve their objectives. Spaces are limited and only two members per club will be accepted. Clubs are required to RSVP by October 8 by contacting Sam Stewart at Fraser Coast Regional Council on 1300 79 49 29 or emailing sam.stewart@ frasercoast.qld.gov.au Bay’s baby whales make a splash on national TV Hervey Bay’s special place in the animal kingdom as a “kindergarten” for Humpback whale calves was featured on national television at the weekend. The segment was aired on Nine Network’s Weekend Today program on Sunday morning to an Australian-wide audience of more than 280,000 viewers. Travel show host and wildlife presenter David Whitehill recently spent two days on-board Blue Dolphin with skipper Peter Lynch fi lming young whale calves and their mothers in the waters of Hervey Bay. Hervey Bay is a very important stopover for the social development of young humpbacks with mothers using its calm, protected waters as a safe haven to teach them essential survival skills in preparation for the deeper, colder waters of Antarctica. It is also possibly the only place in the world where typically highly protective mothers show off their young to whale watchers and push them closer to the whale watching vessels. David Whitehill has been spending the year travelling around the world with Channel Nine and Qantas covering some of its more amazing locations and inspiring wildlife.
