Firies honour life service For almost 20 years Barry Evans has made a point of keeping his head down while serving with the River Heads/Kingfi Fire Brigade. “When you are out driving the fi you keep your head down low so you don’t get noticed, because if you do get noticed, you’ve got problems,” he said. “You keep a low profi le.” But there was no escaping the adoration and pride that was bestowed upon Mr Evans last Friday when he and his late wife Dianne were honoured with a National Medal and a Diligent and Ethical Services Medal for their voluntary service with the brigade. “It has been good,” he said, refl ecting on the many humerous fundraisers his wife ran. He said none were more memorable than a fundraising trivia night with the now Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss. “One night down at the hall during a trivia night we had all the seats lined up... like the seats on aeroplane Barry Evans accepts a National Medal and Diligent and Ethical Service Medals for both himself and his late wife Dianne in recognition of their service to the River Heads/Kingfi sher Rural Fire Brigade from Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen. and Warren was in the front,” he said. “The plane ran into a storm and they were jumping up and down.. and all of a sudden someone yelled out ‘fi re on the plane, fi re on the plane, get some water’. “And they came out with a bucket and Warren copped it. “But it was all full of confetti and styrofoam. “That is when we got in trouble with his wife,” Mr Evan said with a laugh. “‘Why didn’t you tell me this was going to happen? (she said) I would have brought my camera so I could take photos’. “That is the kind of stuff we did.” Despite any differences in opinions, Mr Evans said the brigade’s volunteers always backed each other up. “The camaraderie you fi nd in amongst all these guys - they back you up in a fi re, you couldn’t wish for anything better,” he said. Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen, who knew Mr and Mrs Evans personally, said presenting the medals had been very emotional. “I knew Dianne very well,” he said. “She was a happy-golucky lady.” Mr Sorensen also presented representatives from the Takura, Eurong and Yengarie Rural Fire Brigades with the keys to four new dual-cab, air conditioned fi re trucks. “A very important part of our policy really, is to make sure that the front line services actually get the things that they need,” Mr Sorensen said, adding that it was great to see the strength of the rural fi re brigade’s volunteer base turning out to honour their achievements. relax Relax and diminish aches and pain of tired muscles.
