A place to become... all that you can be ‘Why?’ - key to science success Ask Julia Zhu and she will tell you it is an inquisitive mind and the desire to fi nd out ‘why’ that underpins the strength and tenacity of a good scientist. Eyeing a career in health, the Year 11 student’s future study aspirations were given a major boost of confi dence on August 21 when she was awarded fi rst place in the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Science Research Awards. Together with Aimee Nash, who took out the Senior Scientist Award, Aimee presented the results of her extended experimental research project from semester one in Biology. “I did mine on plants and phototropism and how they bend towards the light,” Julia said, while Aimee’s project focused on the difference in the transpiration rates between native and non-native plants in Australia. Each entrant was given a boar to display the aim, hypothesis, method and results of their experiment, as well as thr minutes to explain their project to the audience and judges. While the judge’s feedback indicated that the scoring between Aimee and Julia’s presentation was tight, Julia felt that there wer quite a few entries that were well presented and was more than surprised when she was awarded top honours. “I take all three sciences - physics, chemistry and biology,” Julia said. “I fi nd science quite interesting and quite worthwhile.” While her subject of choice, chemistry, is mainly about the experiments, she said she fi nds the theory behind all the processes and understanding how it all works is very intriguing. They are just a few of the cherished highlights you will hear about when you ask Year 1 students Hunter Harvey, Aaron Browning and Jelke Spear what they enjoyed most about their fi rst school camp. The camps - which begin in Year 1 when students sleep in their classroom, before moving on to sleeping in outdoor tents in Year 2 - form part of the College’s Outdoor Education Program from Prep to Year 12. The program places an emphasis on learning about the environment, working with others and personal discovery. As the students progress through the year levels the camps and expeditions develop, challenging the children to develop a range of life skills such as self-reliance and independence, resilience and perseverance and interpersonal skills. “Our programs are designed to be challenging for each child’s appropriate year level and progressively seek to take them out of their comfort zone a little more each year,” Fraser Coast Anglican College principal Leisa Harper said. While Davon Bentley and his mum began preparing for the camp the weekend before by buying a new sleeping bag, the fun really began after 2pm when the bell signifying the end of school rang and the Year 1 teachers Mr Brown and Mrs Churchward opened up their adjoining classrooms and began what would Grandparents Day Fundraising For Various Charities International Program Helix Club Double Rugby 7’s Senior Art Exhibition Principal For A Day Festival Film Come Join Us in become an evening of fun and games. The vast range of both hands-on and passive activities ensured the interests of all students were catered for. “I liked sitting in front of the (camp) fi re,” Aaron Browning said. “We got to draw what we saw. “There was logs around the camp fi re and there was a play area with no trees there.” Though the camp was the fi rst time many of the students had spent the night away from family members, Mr Brown said the children had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about both themselves and their surrounds. 2015!
